HONORING THE NATIONAL CITY 125th YEAR CELEBRATION

WHEREAS, National City was founded in 1868 and incorporated on September 17, 1887, making it the second oldest city in San Diego County; and

WHEREAS, National City pioneered the system of shipping and transportation for San Diego, constructing the first wharf and introducing the first transcontinental terminus railroad; and

WHEREAS, the National City Depot is the last one standing out of the original five transcontinental terminus railroad stations and is designated as a California Historical Landmark; and

WHEREAS, National City’s “Brick Row” is the only Philadelphia-style row housing in this part of the United States and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, National City's port along the San Diego Bay is part of Naval Base in San Diego, the largest U.S. Naval base on the West Coast; and

WHEREAS, National City has not only acted as a place recognized for connecting both visitors and residents in and to San Diego due to its historical role in making transportation and shipping possible, but the city is also considered a symbolic gateway and link between Mexico and San Diego; and

WHEREAS, the ________ of San Diego is committed to recognizing and honoring National City and the historical enrichment it has added to overall community well-being during its 125 years of existence; NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT PROCLAIMED by                    and all members of the ­­­­­­­­­­­­___________ ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­on this 22nd day of September 2012 that they do hereby declare this day to be “National City 125 Years Celebration Day” throughout San Diego County.
