The 8th annual Spirits of Mexico Festival, North America’s largest event dedicated to agave spirits, took place in historic Old Town San Diego last month and, according to event producers, experienced its best year yet. Not only was attendance at an all-time high due to this year’s new additions, the festival’s auctions raised more than $16,000 for the Sky Ranch Foundation.

It was a ground-breaking year according to founder Dori Bryant of the International Wine and Spirits Competition Group. A new event in the festival, Tequila Trail, drew in more than 800 attendees on the first day of the week-long festival and the Spirits of Mexico made history receiving an official recognition by the California State Assembly. More than 220 expressions of agave spirits were presented, 20 more than  in previous year and the rarely awarded “Best of Show” title was given to Crotalo Tequila for their Extra Anejo expression, only the second recipient to ever receive this highly coveted honor.

“We are grateful that our dedication to furthering the good word on agave spiritsproduced such a tremendous response,” said Dori Bryant, recently noted as “The Diva of Tequila” by for her work, expertise and passion for all agave spirits. “The overwhelming support from participating brands plus the turnout only serves to prove that we have earned the respect of the industry and the enthusiasts, and secures our status as the industry’s premier event for all of the spirits of Mexico, establishing the Festival as the ultimate proving ground for the best spirits in the world.”

Along with “Best of Show,” “Best of Category” awards were also given to top agave- spirit brands. Winner of Best Tequila Blanco is Siete Leguas; Best Tequila Reposado, Corazon; Best Tequila Anejo, El Jimador; Best Tequila Extra Anejo, Crotalo and Best Mezcal, Los Siete Misterios, Tobala Variety.

The festival’s live auction was hosted this year by celebrity master of ceremonies, Mark DeCarlo. Auctions raised more than $16,000, double the amount earned in the previous year, with all proceeds benefiting the Sky Ranch Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial aid to high-risk youth.

“The Spirits of Mexico Festival takes last month’s feat as a sign of appreciation and will take it to the next level in 2012,” said Bryant. “So long as the master distillers, aficionados, world class brands and, of course, the tremendous and growing fan base keep coming, the largest event for all things agave should carry on for years to come.”
